The endangered & the mysterious

Real residents of the deep — some nearly gone, some barely known. All photos are real (a few of the deep-sea ghosts exist only as expedition shots and old scientific plates).

Humpback whale breaching — **Humpback whale** recovering Back from the brink of whaling — one of conservation's rare victory laps.

Blow of a blue whale — **Blue whale** endangered The largest animal to ever exist. Its heart is the size of a small car.

Vaquita surfacing — **Vaquita** critically endangered The world's rarest marine mammal — around ten individuals remain in the Gulf of California.

Whale shark feeding near the surface — **Whale shark** endangered The biggest fish in the sea, and it eats almost nothing but plankton.

Hawksbill turtle over a reef — **Hawksbill turtle** critically endangered Reef gardener hunted for centuries for its shell — "tortoiseshell" was them.

Giant Pacific octopus suckers on aquarium glass — **Giant Pacific octopus** mysterious Three hearts, blue blood, and enough brains to open jars and hold grudges.

Flapjack octopus on the seafloor — **Flapjack octopus** deep sea A dumbo-octopus cousin that lives as a small adorable pancake on the abyssal floor.

Chambered nautilus swimming in blue water — **Chambered nautilus** living fossil Basically unchanged for 500 million years. It watched the dinosaurs come and go.

Leafy seadragon among kelp — **Leafy seadragon** master of disguise A fish cosplaying as seaweed so convincingly it fools the seaweed.

Sea nettle jellyfish in deep blue water — **Sea nettle** no brain, no problem Drifting through the dark with meter-long stinging tentacles and zero anxiety.

Vampire squid illustration — **Vampire squid** abyssal enigma *Vampyroteuthis infernalis* — "the vampire squid from hell." Lives where oxygen barely exists.
